Metal America Labs
Build a tool for your team, with Claude
One line sets your computer up. After that you describe the tool you want, and Claude builds it with the company sign-in already in place and puts it online for you.
What you need
- Your Metal America Google account.
- A Metal America Claude account. Ask your manager if you do not have one.
- About ten minutes. Nothing here asks for your computer's password.
1. Set up your computer
Press Command and Space, type Terminal and press Enter. Paste this line and press Enter.
curl -fsSL https://labs.metal-america.com/install.sh | sh
Click Start, type PowerShell and press Enter. Paste this line and press Enter.
irm https://labs.metal-america.com/install.ps1 | iex
Open a terminal. Paste this line and press Enter.
curl -fsSL https://labs.metal-america.com/install.sh | sh
- It installs what your computer is missing and skips what it already has.
- Your browser opens once. Choose your Metal America account, not a personal one, and click Allow.
- When it says
All set, close the window.
2. Build your first tool
- Open a new terminal window, so it notices what was installed.
-
Make a folder for the tool and start Claude in it. Use a short name with no spaces in place of
my-tool:mkdir -p ~/coding/my-tool && cd ~/coding/my-tool && claude
- The first time, Claude opens your browser so you can sign in with your Metal America Claude account.
- Type
/new-projectand answer its questions in plain language. - When Claude offers to put the tool online, say yes. A few minutes later it has its own address, with the company sign-in.
3. Change your tool later
Your tool lives in the folder you made for it. To change it, go back to that folder and ask Claude.
-
Open a terminal and paste this, with your tool's name in place of
my-tool:cd ~/coding/my-tool && claude
- Tell Claude what you want changed, in plain words. It makes the change on your computer first, so you can look at it.
-
When you are happy with it, type this to Claude:
A few minutes later the online tool has the change.
publish my changes
4. Let a colleague work on your tool
At first, you are the only person who can change your tool. Other people can use it, but not change it. To let a colleague change it too:
- Open your tool with Claude, as in step 3.
-
Type this to Claude, with your colleague's Metal America email:
add jane@metal-america.com as a maintainer
- Send your colleague this page and your tool's name. They follow step 5.
5. Get a tool on to another computer
Do this when you have a new computer, or when a colleague has added you to their tool. It copies the tool on to the computer in front of you.
- Do step 1 of this page on that computer, if you have not already.
-
Open a new terminal and paste this:
mkdir -p ~/coding && cd ~/coding && claude
-
Type this to Claude, with the tool's name in place of
my-tool. The name is the first part of the tool's address: forquotes.labs.metal-america.comit isquotes./open-tool my-tool
- When Claude says it is done, close Claude. From now on, change the tool as in step 3.
If something goes wrong
- The setup stops with a message. Do what it says and run the same line again. It is safe to repeat.
- "Google would not let this account read the developer kit." You chose a personal Google account. Run the line again and choose the Metal America one.
- A browser window asks you to sign in to Google again, weeks later. That is expected. Choose your Metal America account and carry on.
- Claude asks you for a token, a key or a password. Say no. Nothing here needs one.
- Anything else. Send engineering the exact message you see.
What the setup line does
It downloads a short script from this site and runs it. You can read it first: Mac and Linux, Windows. The script installs Git, Node, the Google Cloud CLI and Claude Code into your own user folder if they are missing, signs you in to Google, and then downloads the company's developer kit, which only signed-in staff can read.
